ADSL to reach 50Mbps over copper lines

intressanter Artikel

SEEMINGLY NEVER ONE to think that something is fast enough as it is, Centillium is up to its tricks again. Only a month ago the company said that it had managed to get ADSL working at 20Mbps. Now the company has a new product that is backwards compatible with ADSL that can reach a downstream of 50Mbps over an ordinary copper network.
The new technology, eXtremeDSLMAX, is capable of running at up to 3Mbps upstream to go with the phenomenal downstream rate. The range is also fairly good with a maximum of 7Km, though Centillium does not say what speed a service would be reduced to at that distance.

To give you an idea of what this sort of speed will do, it means that you will be getting more than 5megabytes per second of download speed. That's an entire 4.7GB DVD in around a quarter of an hour. This is the kind of stuff you really shouldn't expect to see in your home any time soon but it shows where the Internet will be in a few years time.

This technology might seem great but remember that it's not just your speed of connection to the Internet that counts. It will be a long time before the structure of the Internet is fast enough to support more than a few users running at this speed, though there are some very rich companies out there that already know what these sort of speeds are like. µ
