Windows 98 und grosse Festplatten über 128 GB

Rein theoretisch könnte FAT32 mit Festplatten bis ca. 8 Terabyte (TB) umgehen.
Allerdings funktioniert die Verwaltung von Festplatten größer als
128GB nur mittels 48Bit-Adressierung. Diese beherrscht Windows 98 nicht
und von Microsoft gibt es auch keine Patches dafür
(der Support von Windows 98 läuft langsam aus).
Aber über PCI-Festplatten-Controller mit eigenem BIOS/Treibern,
kann man auch unter Windows 98 Festplatten mit mehr als 128GB nutzen
(Einschränkungen mit FDISK, DEFRAG nicht umgehbar, bei deren
Anwendung auf mehr als 127, 5 GB Festplattengrösse, droht Datenverlust)

Hinweis: Eine z.B. 32GB bzw. 64 GB Grenze wird bei älteren Systemen allerdings
nicht von Windows vorgegeben, sondern vom veralteten BIOS.

Im Laufe der PC-Entwicklung gab (und gibt) es die verschiedensten Beschränkungen bei der nutzbaren Festplattengröße (Kapazität).
IDE hatte auf Grund der definierten Kompatibilität zum "Standard"-Controller (WD1003) eine
Begrenzung auf 65536 Zylinder und 16 Köpfe mit je 255 Sektoren, was bei 512 Byte je
Sektor 127 GByte entspricht. Das BIOS hat als Begrenzung 1024 Zylinder und 255 Köpfe mit
je 63 Sektoren, was 7,8 GByte entspricht. Soweit so gut, wenn da nicht der kleinste gemeinsame
Nenner seine Finger im Spiel hätte, aus dem sich durch das sogenannte
CHS-(Cylinders, Heads, Sectors) Verfahren bei IDE folgende Einschränkung ergibt:

Anmerkung: Die 504MB werden manchmal auch als 528MB (bzw. 516MB) bezeichnet.
Dies rührt von der Tatsache her, daß in diesem Fall nach der "Hersteller-Methode" durch
1000 statt durch 1024 geteilt wird um von Byte auf MByte zu kommen
(siehe dazu auch "1000 Byte = 1024 Byte ?")

Mit Hilfe eines Jumpers lassen sich viele moderne Platten auf 33,8GB begrenzen
(dazu wird dem BIOS mit den "Identify Drive data words 60-61" eine Kapazität von
33,8GB gemeldet). Das Betriebssystem kann mit Hilfe des "ATA Set Max command"
die wirkliche Kapazität dem Platten-Treiber melden und so die Beschränkung
nachträglich wieder aufheben.
Windows XP Service Pack 1 und Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 mit 48-bit LBA
Adresstreibern können Platten mit einer Größe von mehr als 137GB direkt ansprechen.
Windows 98, Windows Millennium und Windows NT 4 Service Pack 4 können Platten
bis 137GB direkt ansprechen (bei der Installation von WinNT4 sind es aber nur 8GB)
Mit Hilfe zusätzlicher Treiber (sogenannte "Third-party device driver" vom Board-
oder Controllerhersteller) läßt sich diese Grenze aufheben.
Windows 95 mit VFAT32 hat eine Beschränkung von 8,4GB.
DOS mit FAT16 hat eine Beschränkung von 2,147GB je Partition.

Ext2 Installable File System For Windows

It provides Windows NT4.0/2000/XP with full access to Linux Ext2 volumes
(read access and write access). This may be useful if you have
installed both Windows and Linux as a dual boot environment on your computer.

The "Ext2 Installable File System for Windows" software is freeware.

Features
Detailed list of features of the file system driver Extfs.sys:

Supports Windows NT4.0, Windows 2000 and Windows XP (x86 processors only).
All operations you would expect: Reading and writing files, listing directories, creating,
renaming, moving and deleting files or directories, querying and modifying the volume's
label.

Files larger than 4 GBytes. (Please read the FAQ section, too.)
Paging files are supported. (A paging file is a file "pagefile.sys",
which Windows swaps virtual memory to.) Users may create
paging files at NT's control panel at Ext2 volumes.

Specific functions of the I/O subsystem of NT: Byte range locks,
notification of changes of directories, oplocks
(which are required by the NT LAN manager for sharing files via SMB).
The file system driver Ext2fs.sys caches file data and the file system's
meta data such as directories and all the on-disk structures of the
Ext2 file system. (It uses the file cache of the Windows NT operating system.)
Therefore it is performant. The level of sophistication of the Ext2 file system driver's
implementation is indeed comparable to Windows NT's native file system drivers.

The "Ext2 Installable File System" software package is distributed
as a single executable solution, complete with all of the features.
It is a setup wizard which installs and configures the Ext2 file system
driver. (The screenshots section contains some images of it.)
If you wish to deinstall the software,
select "Add/remove Software" from the Control Panel.

Furthermore, "IFS Drives" is installed at the computer's control panel,
which allows you to assign drive letters to Ext2 volumes.

Partition Saving / SavePart (Standalone)

What's new?
A new version of Partition Saving (V3.00) was released on April, 17th.

Major improvements are:
- writing saving files on NTFS partition. Nevertheless program is not able
to create files on NTFS partition, so you have to perform this into two
steps: first create files from Windows then boot to DOS to be able to
use them. As for FAT partitions, saving a NTFS partition is also available.
- not saving swap files for FAT and NTFS partitions.
This allows winning some time and size on saving files.

Others improvements are:
- forcing check for FAT16 and FAT32 partitions that were saved on
themselves. For FAT12 partitions this could not be performed,
so you have to run check by yourself.
For NTFS partitions this is not needed.
- a correction to not request for option file creation in case of
performing a backup with option file in which filenames are not
full pathname.
- use of zlib compression library version 1.2.2.

Overview: This is a maintenance release, with some additional capabilities
including installation support for all FAT filesystems, primitive PCI driver
support, parallel I/O for disk copy operations, and better multitasking and
interrupt handling performance. In addition, GUI window layout and resizing
has been reimplemented and generally fixed.

The system can now install to and boot from any kind of FAT filesystem
(FAT12, FAT16, and FAT32/VFAT).
Updated the IDE disk controller locking, so that each now have their
own locks; thus I/O can be done in parallel between disks on different
controllers.
Back-ported large numbers small changes and improvements from the
0.6 development branch, including improvements to the operating system's
disk layer. The bootable floppy image for the ISO distribution now contains
only the OS loader and the kernel, because only these are used.
This shrinks the (zipped) ISO image size.
