Toshiba bereitet seinen Rückzug aus dem HD-DVD-Geschäft vor, bestätigten am Samstag japanische Unternehmensprecher gegenüber der Nachrichtenagentur Reuters. Zuvor hatte der japanische Fernsehsender NHK berichtet, dass Toshiba die Produktion von HD-DVD-Playern und -Rekordern bereits eingestellt habe und die letzten Schritte unternehme, um sich aus dem HD-DVD-Geschäft zurück zu ziehen. Der Rückzug koste Toshiba laut NHK mehrere Hundert Millionen US-Dollar. Eine offizielle Verlautbarung solle in Kürze folgen.

Das technisch übelegenere Format gewinnt, passt (patos am 17.02.2008, 02:05:11)

In diesem Fall hat tatsächlich das technisch bessere Format gewonnen.
Eher sehe ich die HD-DVD als Frickelei. Die Player von Toshiba, die
ich bisher gesehen habe waren nichts anderes als PCs auf Linux-Basis,
in denen ein 5-1/4-IDE-Laufwerk verbaut wurde. Hingegen ist das
technische Design BluRay-Playern von Sony wirklich aus einem Guß und
die Geräte sehen auch noch sehr schick aus (man sehe sich mal bei
sony.jp um).

BluRay ist technisch überlegen, weil:

- es von Anfang an als aufnahmefähiges Medium gedacht war, der erste
BluRay-Player überhaupt (Sony BDZ-S77, 2003 in Japan erschienen) war
ein Recorder; der erste HD-DVD-Recorder von dem ich gehört habe, war
ein Laptop-Brenner von Toshiba (2007) und dessen Test in der c't
bescheinigte diesem katastrophale Brennergebnisse (zuviele
Schreibfehler); die HD-DVD war eben nicht von Vornherein als
Aufnahmemedium gedacht, dies wurde erst später "reingefrickelt" und
wie man sieht sehr schlecht

- die Scheiben haben eine höhere Datendichte haben, da sie auf Laser
mit blauer Wellenlänge setzen und die HD-DVD Laser-Licht im roten
Bereich verwendet (die Wellenlänge des Lichts muss immer kleiner
sein, als die aufzulösende Struktur, das ist reine Physik und
unumgänglich); die HD-DVD erreicht höhere Speicherkapazitäten nur
durch mehrere Lagen (meist problematisch ab 3 Lagen), also nicht
wirklich konsequent weiterentwickelt; das ist wie, als würden die
Hersteller von Festplatten die Kapazitäten nur durch zusätzliche
Scheiben erhöhen statt zusätzliche die Dichte zu steigern

- für die Datenträger extra ein neuer hoch-kratzfester Kunststoff von
TDK als Schutzschicht entwickelt wurde (der Abstand zwischen
Datenschicht und Oberfläche ist bei der BluRay wegen der kleineren
numerischen Apertur notwendigerweise geringer), die ersten BluRays
waren deswegen noch in Cartridges (Sony BDZ-S77)

- es für interaktive, hardwareunabhängige Anwendungen weitaus besser
geeignet ist, da es konsequent auf Java setzt; ich bin zwar überhaupt
kein Freund von Java-Anwendungen, aber dies ist genau ein
Einsatzfeld, wo sich Java wirklich hervorragend eignet (dank der
100%-igen Hardwareunabhängigkeit, die übrigens Microsoft mit seinem
Visual J kaputtmachen wollte und zum Glück dabei eins auf die Finger
bekommen hat); eventuelle Geschwindigkeitsnachteile durch Java werden
durch neuere, schnellere Embedded-Prozessoren nicht mehr bestehen,
dafür kann aber *jede* Hardware-Plattform BluRay-fähig werden, egal
welcher Prozessor drin werkelt; ich *vermute* dagegen, in
HD-DVD-Playern stecken immer x86-Prozessoren

- es ständig weiterentwickelt wird (siehe PiP-Funktionen in neueren
BluRay-Profilen usw.)

Ich bin der Meinung, dass HD-DVD nur ein halbherziger Versuch der
PC-Industrie war (denn kein geringerer als Microsoft, Intel und
Toshiba als großer PC-Hersteller stecken dahinter) dem von Grund auf
völlig neu entwickelten BluRay mit einem "Update" der DVD irgendwie
Paroli bieten zu können, um auch am Markt von HD-TV und Co mitmischen
zu können ohne jedoch dem Erzfeind Sony, die sehr viel Geld in die
Entwicklung von BluRay gesteckt haben (Herstellung blauer Laser z.B.
ist z.Zt. noch sehr aufwendig), dafür Lizenzgebühren zahlen zu
müssen. Zu Recht finde ich, ist die HD-DVD untergegangen, es ist
definitiv das (technisch) schlechtere Format !!
