Die Zip-Datei enthält zwei Varianten des Lame-Encoders:
eine DLL- und eine EXE-Version.
Beide Versionen lassen sich als MP3-Encoder in Audiograbber verwenden.

Die DLL-Version (lame_enc.dll) ist für Einsteiger leichter einzubinden,
da die Einstellungen einfach über die eingebaute Oberfläche von
Audiograbber vorgenommen werden können. Für die normale Anwendung
sind die Konfigurationsmöglichkeiten ausreichend, allerdings auf keinen
Fall so flexibel und umfassend wie die der Exe-Version

Mit der EXE-Version (lame.exe) können deutlich mehr Feineinstellungen
vorgenommen werden , entweder über eigene Parameter oder sog. Presets.
Diese Version ist für alle zu empfehlen, die auf die Klangqualiät
besonderen Wert legen und ein wenig Zeit zum Experimentieren haben

seit Ende 2000 nicht mehr weiterentwickelt wird.

Messer steht für "Memo Session Sound Recorder". Das praktische Tool nimmt über
die Soundkarte und entsprechend der Windows-Aufnahmeeinstellungen als WAV
oder im platzsparenden MP3 Format auf.
Neben der Aufnahme als Wave-Datei wird MP3 in Form des LAME Encoders unterstützt.
Dazu muss die "lame_enc.dll" (Download) in das Messer Programmverzeichnis kopiert werden.

Herausragendes Feature des Aufnahmeprogramms ist die Zeitsteuerung:
Wie beim Videorekorder können beliebig viele Sessions mit Start und Endzeit
der Aufnahme eintragen werden. Hilfreich sind ein Levelmeter zur Kontrolle
des Eingangspegels und ein CPUmeter zur Anzeige der Prozessorauslastung.

Praktisch: Eine nach Dauer und Eingangspegel definierbare Pausenerkennung
unterbricht bei Bedarf die Aufnahme oder beginnt eine neue Datei ("Track-Erkennung").
Auch für das Herunterfahren des Rechners nach einer Aufnahme gibt es verschiedene Optionen.

Eine direkte MP3-Aufnamhme benötigt Prozessorleistung, da in Echtzeit
kodiert werden muss. Sehr ordentliche Qualität bietet 192 kbps/joint-stereo,
was auf einem Athlon 650 ohne Probleme gelingt.
LAME-Presets werden nicht direkt unterstützt. Allerdings gibt es
spezielle lame_enc.dll Versionen, die z.B. nur "alt-preset fast standard" kodieren,
egal welche Einstellung in Messer vorgenommen wurde (modifizierte lame_enc.dll).
Das ergibt nicht nur Top-Qualität,
sondern man kann bei den Kodiereinstellungen auch nichts verkehrt einstellen.

Einsteigern, die sich mit den Windows-Aufnahmeinstellungen noch nicht auskennen,
empfehlen wir unsere Anleitung "Radio, Kassette, LP & Co aufnehmen".
Nach den ersten erfolgreichen Aufnahmen dürfte der Umstieg auf Messer leichter fallen.
